A documentary about Malaria. Malaria is a deadly disease which is caused by a small parasite that commonly infects mosquitoes. In the west, the problem of malaria has largely been quashed thanks in a large part to pesticides and insecticides but overall it is still one of the largest killers hence the documentaries title: “Malaria the serial killer”. As a result, there are more than 20,000 cases of the disease that come back to the west every year from malaria-prone countries. As worldwide travel is becoming more common it is more important than ever that a solution to the pandemic is found.
There are actually four different species of the Malaria parasite Plasmodium: P. falciparum, P. malaria, P. ovale and P. vivax. Once infected with the virus there are a number of symptoms that can be identified: Diarrhoea, Jaundice, fever and vomiting. This is done via a blood test. Treatment varies depending on which species you have been infected by.
This documentary highlights what is happening with the Malaria pandemic and what is being done to resolve the problem. If you find yourself travelling to a malaria-prone region you should make some simple precautions: See a doctor before you travel to get any appropriate medicines. Wear Insect repellent and use a mosquito net.
