Hoop Dreams is a 1994 documentary created by filmmaker Steve James (Hampton, Virginia, USA) about two young basketball players from inner-city Chicago who are working towards becoming professional players. The film follows them in their struggle to become established college players which would give them to chance to make into the NBA.
The two players that Hoop Dreams follows are William Gates (b December 28, 1971 in Chicago, Illinois, USA) and Arthur Agee (b November 22, 1972 in Chicago, Illinois, USA). Both William and Arthur show great potential and are are actively recruited as they look to enter high school but this is just the start of the story which is by no means a straight road.
Hoops Dreams has never won or even been nominated for a coverted “best documentary” however it remains as a critically acclaimed classic.
