Historian Bettany Hughes investigates the magnificent story of Atlantis by the Greek philosopher Plato. This fictional Island has captivated the imaginations of people over the centuries and influenced the literature of future writers, but was this awe-inspiring place that met with a fateful end really based on a real event?
In the Atlantis documentary “The Evidence” Bettany talks to experts in geological, archaeological and historical studies to reveal Plato’s work was actually based on a real event which was one of the greatest natural disasters in the ancient world. The Thera Eruption that happened between 1642–1540 BCE could be the culprit which swallowed up the mythical place which possessed unimaginable wealth.
A quote from Plato:
But afterwards there occurred violent earthquakes and floods; and in a single day and night of misfortune all your warlike men in a body sank into the earth, and the island of Atlantis in like manner disappeared in the depths of the sea.
