Until the Light Takes Us is a 2009 documentary co-directed Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell which explores the rise of black metal music in Norway during the 1990's.
Black metal is characterised by deep usually drop-tuned guitars and lyrics associated with the supernatural. Combine this with the cool-sounding Norwegian accent and you have some pretty heavy duty music. The documentary "Until the Light Takes Us" not only looks into how this music spread like wildfire across the country but how the subculture developed a dark side.
Using interviews with musicians, people who were apart of the subculture and archive footage we explore every aspect of this movement. The film also looks into murders and church arsons which were attributed to black metal.
