In the 2010 documentary "Tabloid", director Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line) investigates the story of Joyce McKinney, a former beauty queen.
In 1977 McKinney, originally from Salt Lake City Utah hit the headlines in Britain for what has become known as the Manacled Mormon case. Mormon missionary, Kirk Anderson was kidnapped on the steps of his church near Epsom, England, chained up and repeatedly raped by McKinney and an accomplice.
Before the case could be tried she fled back to the United States in order to avoid prosecution while on bail. The case received attention in massive proportions by the media, no doubt because of the strange circumstances but the legal proceeding only resulted in a one year sentence. A futile conviction because she wasn't even in the country and never ended up serving it.
