Man with a Movie Camera: A man travels around a city with a camera slung over his shoulder, documenting urban life with dazzling invention. This is one of the first “documentary” film examples which documents the day in the life in the Soviet Union as it existed in 1929. First released on 12th May 1929 in the United States this silent black and white film was for the most part shot in Kharhow which is now Ukraine and is considered one of the greatest documentary films ever made due to its experimental cinematography.
Man with a Movie Camera is a revolutionary piece of work considering the limitations of technology at the time and is listed among the top “1001 movies that you must see before you die”.
The reason this is 'must see' for video artists is because you will realise that basically everything video artists have been doing the past 80 years has been a waste of time. Vertov perfected it first try. It's over. It ended with The Man with the Movie Camera.
