When the World Trade Centre buildings collapsed on September 11th 2001 there was a building standing in between, the Marriott WTC hotel. The hotel was housing 940 people at the time, most of them tourists. There have been dozens, if not hundreds, of documentaries about the Twin Towers and several about ‘building 7’, but very few people have come to know the story of those who occupied the Marriott on that fateful day.
As the towers smouldered the hotel was hit with burning debris and was eventually completely destroyed. Most of the occupants of the hotel managed to escape alive, however, 40 people died in the hotel including two members of staff and several firefighters. Hotel Ground Zero tells the story of 14 occupants who were trapped inside the hotel but managed to miraculously survive with the help of rescuers. Some of those survivors are interviewed for this documentary.
