Harlan County USA, an Oscar-Award winning 1976 sociopolitical documentary film which documents the infamous "Brookside Strike" in 1973.
This strike consisted of 180 coal miners and their wives against the Duke Power Company-owned Eastover Coal Company's Brookside Mine and Prep Plant in Harlan County, southeast Kentucky. They fought for safer working conditions, something many of us take for granted today but back then people really didn't whether they were going to return home from work in one piece, if not at all.
Despite its age, Harlan County USA delivers a powerful message; that sticking together to do something right can work.
