Dirty Pictures is a 2010 biographical drug documentary about Alexander Sasha Shulgin who was a chemist responsible for creating more than 200 psychedelic compounds including the notorious MDMA (Ecstacy).
Shulgin's vast number of discoveries made a massive impact on psychedelic research and as a result, he is considered to be one of the top chemists of the 20th century. Of course, while he is highly respected in the scientific community he is also a legend for recreational users of these drugs.
The documentary Dirty Pictures takes a detailed look a the life of Dr Shulgin and in doing so takes us inside his home laboratory in Northern California. We see that Shulgin is as passionate about psychedelic research as ever and continues to synthesise new drugs to this day. In a broader context, it also examines how much of an impact these psychoactive chemicals have had on understanding the human mind and mysteries of how the universe works.
