Apocalypse: The Second World War, is a French-made war documentary series hosted by Mathieu Kassovitz which takes us through 6 significant stages before and during WW2.

 

This film comprises completely of historic archive footage from French citizens, resistance fighters, soldiers and war journalists. Everything has been remastered and is presented in full colour.

 

The first part explores the rise of aggression in Nazi Germany from 1933-1939 and the subsequent invasion of Poland.

 

The second part examines the disaster for both the British and French armies on the beaches of Dunkirk in 1939-1940.

 

Part 3 is about the shock (Blitzkrieg) tactics that the German army used in the early stages of world war 2 to make astonishing military victories. Significant battles highlighted are the Desert War, Invasion of Yugoslavia, Battle of Greece and Battle of Crete, Operation Barbarossa, Battle of Smolensk and Battle of Moscow.

 

The fourth part is when WW2 truly went global with the attack on Pearl Harbour, Midway and Guadalcanal, Operation Fall Blau.

 

Part five explores when the tides began to turn on the Nazi regime in 1942, paying specific attention to the battle of Stalingrad and the Italian campaign.

 

The final part showcases the dramatic ending days of World War 2, including the fall of Germany and the dropping of the atomic bombs.
