The 2016 "4.1 Miles" documentary by Greek filmmaker Daphne Matziaraki is about a Hellenic Coast Guard captain based on the Greek island of Lesbos who had been tasked with saving migrants crossing the Aegean Sea.
The film captures one day in the life of Christos Sapounas and the horror of the European migrant crisis where thousands of people were attempting to cross the ocean by any means necessary. Travelling across the sea is often dangerous in an ample vessel but these migrants were travelling in blowup dingies that were vastly over-capacity. As a result, hundreds were dying on a regular basis.
4.1 miles won the 2016 43rd Annual Student Film Awards - Best Documentary (Gold).
